To drive a car in Pennsylvania you must have auto insurance. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has strict requirements for minimum liability insurance coverage needed to drive in PA. This includes a minimum of $15,000 of coverage for an injury or death to one person in a single accident, $30,000 of coverage for injuries or deaths to more than one person in a single accident, and $5,000 of property damage insurance. Remember, these are just the minimum requirements set forth by PA for auto insurance. Most people purchase more than the minimum coverage, and it is highly recommended that you purchase as much insurance as you can afford in case of an accident.

There are two ways that you can go about becoming insured in Pennsylvania. You can either apply for auto insurance from a carrier, or you can become self-insured. Although using a carrier is the easier way, some people prefer to self-insure. No matter what you decide, you must alert PennDot to tell them that you meet the minimum requirements for auto insurance. If you fail to show proof of insurance you may face the following: a $300+ fee for driving without insurance, a 3 month registration and driver’s license suspension, a $50 registration reinstatement fee, and a $50 driver’s license reinstatement fee. When you add up the costs associated with an accident combined with the costs of driving without insurance it makes perfect sense to purchase PA auto insurance.

In Pennsylvania, auto insurance is required to legally drive a car.  Hundreds of insurance carriers, from national companies to local ones, offer competitive rates on auto insurance.  To find the company that offers the rates that fit your needs you should follow these simple steps.  First, be sure to get insurance quotes from many different companies.  This will help you compare rates, discounts, and other advantages that you could receive.  It will also make you more comfortable when the decision comes to pick the coverage you need.  Next, when analyzing rates from auto insurance companies, make sure they are providing substantial coverage.  Some companies may offer extremely low rates, but their coverage will be mediocre.  In Pennsylvania you need to meet a minimum amount of auto insurance coverage which is set by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), so purchase enough insurance to at least cover the minimum.

When companies offer insurance coverage they take many factors into account.  For Pennsylvania auto rates, companies will analyze factors such as the average number of accidents, average number of claims, the age of the driver, driving record and experience, gender, credit score, and location.  Pennsylvania is a little above the average for auto insurance rates compared to other states.  As a Pennsylvania driver, you are responsible for alerting PennDOT of your coverage.  To get the most affordable rates on your auto insurance be diligent in your search and make sure you keep a clean driving record.
